Billy is born in a northern town where men box and work in the mines. They do not dance and they certainly do not harbour ambitions of attending the Royal Ballet School. But Billy is a bit different. Brought up by a single father, without a mother's touch, Billy does not want to fight, but is enthralled by the grace and wonder of ballet. With gritty determination he attempts to prove the doubters wrong by going all the way.
In 2004, the creative team - director Stephen Daldry, writer Lee Hall and choreographer Peter Darling - got together again to create a musical version of the film. The music for Billy Elliot the Musical comes from singer-songwriter legend Elton John. Like the film, Billy Elliot the Musical contains strong language and some scenes of confrontation between policemen and miners.
Since its opening in March 2005, Billy Elliot the Musical has played to over a quarter of a million people. The critically acclaimed production, attracting audiences of all ages, won the 2005 Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Musical and the Best Musical award in the 51st Evening Standard Awards.
"Billy boy this is the greatest musical yet" - Daily Telegraph
